FLT LT DR J. K. MBAEZUE B.A, B.Sc. (rtd )NAF 759, from 1976 - 1979 CLINICALLY STATES " THE ORIGIN OF ENDEMIC SOCIAL MALAISE IN THE NIGERIAN ARMED FORCES INTRODUCED BY JACOB AGUNWA WAS/IS THE ETIOLOGY, DEVELOPMENT AND GENESIS OF THE PERENNIAL LYING CULTURE AND POLITICAL DISHONESTY IN THE WIDER CIVILIAN ETHOS WE SEE TODAY".

THE REMEDY TO THE NIGERIAN PERENNIAL MILITARY SEEKING TO BE PRESIDENTS OR GOVERNORS QUESTION IS TO BAN ALL SOLDIERS FROM POLITICS UNTIL EACH HAS GOT AT LEAST A BACHELORS DEGREE IN POLITICS SAYS DR JIDEOFO DANMBAEZUE

THIS IS A REPRODUCTION OF AN ARTICLE THAT IS MORE THAN A DECADE OLD YET VERY THERAPEUTIC FOR US ALL TODAY

N T A - A M E X P R E S S FOR 2005
This is a correctional programme for the nation

THE NIGERIAN ARMED FORCES DOES NOT IMPART POST-SERVICE UTILITARIAN SKILLS TO ITS OFFICERS AND MEN

The Nigerian Armed Forces as an institution does not impart any viable professional skills to its officers and men that can give them adequate gainful employment on retirement. That is why they are all over the place jostling and hustling for political appointments and patronage. It is only in Nigeria that retired officers from the army, navy and air force are ungentle-manly. They tell lies, they bribe, they cheat and they dupe even their friends or snatch other people’s wives. This is possible, because since the civil war ended in the country in 1970, our military colleges do not turn out gentlemen officers any longer! Admission is by quota system and nepotic connections. Only sons of emirs, retired senior officers and those who are ready to pay thousands of naira get admissions into the Nigerian Academy. So, how do you expect gentlemen to be turned out from such politically-polluted institutions?

Just take a census of who is who in the present government in all the states of the federation. There is hardly any retired officer who is satisfied with his lot and/or loot! Only a few are proud to keep their hands clean or heads high above clandestine business connections. Only a negligible number can be confided in to retain any gentleman’s agreement! Show me the ex-army, navy or air force officers that have established reputable business concerns and so have given employment to the youths of this nation. It is hard to single-out anyone that has not enriched himself while in uniform or out of it! Most of them are directly or indirectly involved in governance either at the local, state or federal levels. It is shameful that after thirty-five years in uniform, most retired army officers condescend to party politicking and brigandage. Go over to Britain, France and USA to compare notes; you will see most of their counterparts contributing meaningfully to the economical development of their countries. The skills they acquired while in service are channelled into productive endeavours. They are role models to the youth who greet them, as ‘Gentlemen Officers’. A greater percentage of them are revered patriots with national honours bestowed on them for their contributions to the upliftment of their communities after retirement.
But in Nigeria, a country of ‘vagabonds in power’, the pastime of the average retired army officer is partisan politics of ‘kill-and-eat’ mentality. They train and manage despicable political thugs!

I was a kid when the Late Nnamdi Azikiwe propounded the theory of diarchy in 1972. I had just gained admission into the University of Lagos. The first public outing I had was sitting quietly at the auditorium of Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, for three gruesome hours listening patiently to the great sage but comprehending very little. It was only three years later that I understood the contents of his epoch-making lecture on the way out of the dark waters of the Nigerian Army misadventure into politics.

Today, thirty-five years later, his prophetic depositions are coming true. Whereas the Great Statesman actually recommended a diarchy wherein the civilian class produced the presidents, governors and other versions of social and political leaders and the military class their deputies; to act as safety valves to checkmate the excesses of the political class, the reverse is now being implemented. The most annoying aspect of the nauseating saga is that it is the half-baked, semi-educated elites who should know better the import of Zik’s recommendations, are the very ones hovering around with piles of ‘curriculum vitae’ chasing the military class for some appointments. This is the clearest evidence that the level of Nigerian education has fallen so low that princes are now servants in the socio-political arena! Shame to all those involved in Nigerian politics who prefix ‘Professor’ or ‘Doctor’ to their names! They are glaring disgraces to the universities that awarded them such titles in the first place, and a disappointment to their local communities for being such low political prostitutes. Whereas their high-sounding degrees should give them positions of ‘prima inter pars’ wherever they find themselves and equally place them above board, they are the lowliest of the political class for now. They are simply the errand boys used to write speeches and organise protocols to deceive the populace.

Think of all the double-speaking canaries that have served in the various military juntas that raped our democracy; sugar-coated information ministers, chairmen of electoral commissions, local ambassadors of military governors, image makers and money-laundering agents and such other appointments they chased around in the past regimes and you will feel sorry for Nigeria, yourself and Africa. What are retired officers looking for in politics? Did the military academy train them to lead civilians or soldiers at the battle front? Well, if the nation cannot revisit the charter establishing the academies in the country and re-orientate officers and men of the armed forces to their primary roles, political hooliganism shall forever be the recurrent pastimes of every retired General, Brigadier and Colonel. Do not say I did not warn you! After all no one listened to the Great Zik of Africa, so why should any one take me seriously.
What was ‘Maradona’ stating in 1999 when he proposed OBJ as the best option for a civilian president? When will Nigeria produce graduates of universities who can read the handwriting on the wall? When will NYSC be returned to what it was originally meant to serve? When will the landlords of this nation regain their lost positions as the firstborns in the Nigerian family? When will ‘me-guards’ do their jobs and leave the cleaning and decoration of the parlours, dinning rooms and bedrooms to the sons and daughters of the family? Nigerians, where are we going, is it to hell or heaven with our oil wealth? We need a re-think before doomsday overtakes us in 2007!

TO THE EDITOR,
sunnewsonline@mail.com,
This is a privileged article. I am a research scientist busy with finding an alternative to the anti-retroviral drugs with which the West is currently fleecing Africaand other developing nations. So for me to make out time and script this piece is under the compulsion of the Holy Spirit. If you love this nation, publish it unabridged. I am a soldier and I can take all the shots. Write me or phone. After 48 hours, I will send it to another newsprint if you neglect to take this golden opportunity to earn your salary. This nation needs just a handful of honest and diligent men and women who tell the truth, live the truth and propagate same without fear or favour. I have never taken part in politics nor sought for nor got any government patronage since I retired voluntarily in November 1979. Today I trek the streets of Enuguwhereas my name and that of the current 3rd term-seeking president appeared on the same Part II Orders, an official gazette showing officers who retired honourably. It grieves me that that the educated class including all the journalists are allowing ‘me-guards’ to run the palace of this nation, whereas the only training they received was how to fight external aggressors of the nation and manage violence when invited to do so. So, why do you allow them to buy the consciences of everyone with the money they stole from the treasury of this nation?

May God bless our country by giving us genuine leaders so that our wives and children will smile once more as they did before the civil war, Amen!
While I still remain an oppressed compatriot,
Yours in tears for my beloved nation,

Jude Danmbaezue THE FALLACY OF BELIEVING THAT A SOLDIER CAN LEAD CIVILIANS IN A DEMOCRACY IS UTTERLY FALSE, PUERILE AND UNINTELLIGENT. SOLDIERS LEAD MEN WHO WERE TRAINED TO OBEY ORDERS BLINDLY WITHOUT QUESTIONS AT THE BATTLEFRONT. SO NO REAL TRAINED OFFICER CAN LEAD MEN WHO HAVE THE OPTION TO REFUSE ORDERS, ASK QUESTIONS AND DECIDE FOR THEMSELVES THE RIGHT COURSE OF ACTIONS TO TAKE. LET US FACE THE FACTS. THE PROLONGED MILITARY RULE IS WHAT DESTROYED THIS COUNTRY. LET US STOP THE FOOLERY OF THINKING THAT ANY BUHARI, BABAGINDA, OBASANJO e.t.c. .e.e.t.c. Jude Danmbaezue A few weeks ago, Luxembourgofficials announced the freezing of $630 million belonging to the Abachas in the Luxembourg subsidiary of a German bank. There has been talk, also, that the $630 million frozen in Luxembourg belong to some children of late Gen. Abacha, family friends and some of his regime officials.
Reports that some of the funds are in a number of banks in Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, China, Dubai, the U.S, and Luxembourg have been cited by some sources. Switzerland cited in January 2000 the existence of $645 million in their country as one of Abacha's accounts.
Increasingly, and with every additional discovery and announcement of stolen funds, Abacha's five years and record of looting of public funds during his iron-fisted rule from November of 1993 to 1998, have become a metaphor for mindless and insatiable plunder of public resources. Worse, the sums are exponentially in excess of his salary as a soldier, by well over 850 million times. Go figure!
The international tangle with other central banks and finance houses as Nigeria seeks to regain some of the known funds has not been a cake walk. Some of the privacy laws of banks and countries have protected such funds. Before Abacha, Zaire's late dictator and kleptomaniac-in-chief Mobutu Sese Seko would rather the funds he stole from his impoverished country in central Africa stay with and be dispensed by the Euro-Caucasian bankers than have a handful of those dollars, deutch marks and pound sterling redevelop Zaire.
The Abachas and Mobutus, and in deed, some other less known wealthy folks of African heritage and ancestry keep millions of funds away from the continent's financial houses. This dries up economic resources "back home" while the European, American and other international banks earn huge operational fees/interests from such funds.
If the Nigerian government is able to prove "in a court of law" the massive translocation of funds from the Central Bank of Nigeria and other corrupt activities, a dozen Johnnie Cochrans will not save the Abacha loot. Rather, our brilliant "Brother Johnnie" will enlist himself in the Black Book of Infamy and the Lootocracy we were sentenced to in Nigeria by the late brutal ruler Abacha, and a gang of soldier-businessmen-politicians who ruined the emerging destiny of Nigeria since 1966.
In Nigeria and other parts of Africa, Mr. Cochran will realize, sooner rather than later, that professional legalistic skills are usually considered as an affirmative endorsement of your client's lifestyle (or in Abacha's much advertised case, a boundless, corrosive acquisition of public funds).
Some Nigerians will believe, right or wrong, that their stolen funds will be used to pay the high-flying, smooth-talking but effective lawyer, Johnnie Cochran. I must say that I believe that everyone should have the right to a lawyer, especially under judicious and equitable circumstances. Those who come to equity must come with their hands clean, my very many lawyer friends are quick to say. But are Abacha's hands clean, amidst the evidence of corruption?

Jude Danmbaezue Just before the splitting of jurisprudential hairs begin, and legalistic nuance and dynamic technicalities become the currency on the highway of justice and law, may I inform our Brother Johnnie Cochran that he may never in this lifetime, adequately, understand the brutish mannerisms, the dislocation of the nation's psyche and extent of depravity and ill-purpose imposed through the force of guns and physical assault by the Abacha dictatorship on Nigeria and Nigerians.
It was for such reason that I questioned during a late March 1998 press conference in South Africa U.S President Bill Clinton's ill-advised comments a few hours earlier, essentially, to the terrible effect that "Gen. Abacha could run for President as a civilian, if he (Abacha) met the criteria to contest the elections in Nigeria."
Interestingly, Abacha was the referee for the elections, he changed the rules depending on what side of the bed he woke up; and whatever phantasmagoric illusions possessed his mind. What did Cochran say when Abacha ruled Nigerians with scorpions and snakes and bayonets?
Current U.S. national Security adviser Sandy Berger and former Press Secretary Mike McCurry retracted Clinton's error of judgement when I continued to raise the moral contradictions while I covered Clinton's 1998 visit in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Some of Clinton's advisers on Nigeria, I learned with additional news and policy investigations, were persons with divided loyalty; specifically, a handful of them saw, shall we say, eye to eye with the late dictator Abacha.
This offers some insight to the dynamic inactivity of theClinton administration who did not offer adequate and muscular support to former ambassador Walter Carrington, the U.S chief diplomat in Nigeria (and Abacha's non-Nigerian tormentor-in-chief. See my profile-commentary on Ambassador Carrington's work on Nigeria on another section of USAfricaonline.com
I've not even started to cite for Mr. Cochran the factual data of blanket abuse of whole communities and targeted persons. Missing fathers and sons. Murdered wives. Where shall we start? Therefore, permit me to say that the Abacha issues and lawyering go beyond the dry exegis of legal scholarship and competency about technicalities and spirit of the law by the likes of Johnnie Cochran. No. Abacha is no O.J! And, the memory of Nigerians about Abacha's years and loot cannot be dulled by tactical scientific minutiae about DNA sampling, presentations of timeline, and assorted hypotheses resting on a variable of the probability of one of 10 million, and all that jazzz.... No; Nigeria is notLos Angeles.
As a continental African whose work has essentially been one of building bridges of understanding regarding our shared heritage, one seriously hopes Nigerians and other Africans understand that this Abacha deal, Mr. Cochran's first controversial public issue foray into Nigeria, represents only his personal financial reward rather than a reflection of any form of overall African-American position on how Abacha and Co plundered and bludgeoned Nigeria and Nigerians.

Jude Danmbaezue Although, during the first O.J Simpson trial, I was contextually enthralled by his brilliance and total "cool" inside the law court and outside, I'll leave Brother Johnnie Cochran with the wise words of our Mongo folks in the central African nation of the Congo who said: "He who finds a fly in his plate has certainly had enough." Brother Johnnie, this Abacha issue may turn out to be the fly in your plate. Think about it; until then: Stay blessed, my friends.

A KENEZIAN PROPHYLAXIS FOR 1967 - 1970 FRATRICIDE

DR JACOB GOWON NEEDS TO KNEEL DOWN INENUGU AND PUBLICLY BEG GOD TO FORGIVE HIM FOR UNKNOWINGLY KILLING HIS BLOOD BROTHERS FROM 1967 TILL 1970

ABSTRACT

How Does A British Doctor Of Political Science Prefer To Answer General Jacob Gowon That His British Instructors Change To ‘Yakubu’ To Give Him “YAKUBU GOWON” That Is Neither A Full Muslim Nor Christian Nomenclature! Whichever He Maintains Now He Needs To Come Down To Enugu, Publicly Kneel Down And Pray That The Almighty Creator Forgives All Those Who Killed Seven Million Biafrans. He Must Pray On Behalf Of All Officers And Men That Were Under His Command And Obafemi Awolowo Who Forced Him To Use Starvation, Which A Sanhurst Trained Officer He Knew Was Against GenevaConventions And "The Rules Of Engagement",,, Thus His Camouflage Of "Nigeria Prays" Is Hypocritical.

1.   DOCTOR OF POLITICAL SCIENCE OR GENERAL JACOB GOWON that his British instructors changed to YAKUBU to get the amorphous YAKUBU GOWON, which is neither A FULL Muslim name nor a FULL Christian name. Split Personality Syndrome is the result.
2.   WHICHEVER HE PREFERS AND ANSWERS FOR NOW, HE NEEDS TO COME DOWN TO ENUGU, PUBLICLY KNEEL DOWN IN OUR STADIUM AND PRAY THAT HIS NUCEAR FAMILY BE SAVED AND THAT THE ALMIGHTY CREATOR FORGIVES ALL THOSE WHO KILLED SEVEN MILLION BIAFRANS.
3.   HE MUST PRAY ON BEHALF OF ALL OFFICERS AND MEN THAT WERE UNDER HIS COMMAND FROM 1966 – 1970 AND MEMBERS OF HIS WAR COUNCIL, especially CHIEF OBAFEMI AWOLOWO WHO FORCED HIM TO USE STARVATION, WHICH AS A BRITISH SANHURST TRAINED OFFICER HE KNEW WAS AGAINST GENEVA CONVENTIONS AND "THE RULES OF ENGAGEMENT",,, .....
4.   THIS HIS CAMOUFLAGE OF "NIGERIA PRAYS" HE INAUGURATED IN HIS TRUE HOMETOWN IS HYPOCRITICAL. WHY DID HE THE SON OF A CLERGYMAN & A MIDDLE-BELT CHRISTIAN MURDER FELLOW CHRISTIANS IN THE SOUTH DURING THE CIVIL WAR LEADING MUSLIMS TO ANNIHILATE THEM … AND
5.   AGAIN NOW THAT HE HAS SUCCESSFULLY TRACED HIS GENEALOGICAL ROOTS AND TRULY KNOWS HE IS AN INDIGENE OF ABAKALIKI IN EBONYI STATE NOW ...,, IS HE SO ASHAMED OF HIMSELF & HIS GENUINE ANCESTRY THAT HE REALISED IT WAS AN ABAKALIKI MAN THAT FOUGHT AGAINST AN NNEWI MAN ..

I MIGHT AS WELL BRING TOGETHER ANOTHER LENGTHY POST ON THE SAME ISSUE OF GENUINE FORGIVENESS AND REPARATION OWED THE IGBOS

Jude Danmbaezue
IT SOUNDS LIKE SWEET MUSIC. AT LEAST ONE HUMANITARIAN GENIUS STILL LIVES INODUDUWA REPUBLIC. HOW MANY YOROUBAS KNOW THAT IF OBAFEMI AWOLOWO HAD SECEDED AS HE AGREED WITH CHUKWUEMEKA ODUNEGWU OJUKWU, THERE WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN A CIVIL WAR. SEARCH ALL MY POSTS IN THE LAST 12 WEEKS AND SEE THE HISTORICAL TRUTHS ONLY PROF WOLE SOYINKA KNOWS ALL THE DETAILS BUT SURPRISINGLY KEEPS MUTE. SAME WITH MAJOR ADEGBOYEGA, THE ONLY SURVIVING OFFICER OF THE FIVE THAT CARRIED OUT THE JANUARY 1966 COUP, AND THE PERSONAL SECRETARY TO AWOLOWO WHO OPENED UP SLIGHTLY LAST MONTH.
A HUMANITARIAN YORUBA GENUIS APOLOGISES TO THE IGBOS
Yoruba to Igbos: “We’re Sorry for the Civil War Atrocities” – Femi Aribisala Pleads for Unity
Among the different ethnic groups in Nigeria, the Igbo are without a doubt, one of the most remarkable. So remarkable, indeed, that some have even traced their ancestry to biblical Israel, as the far-flung descendants of Jacob, the Jewish patriarch. Gad, Jacob’s seventh son, is said to have had three sons who settled in South-eastern Nigeria.
These sons; Eri, Arodi and Areli, are believed to have fathered clans in Igbo-land and to have founded such Igbo towns as Aguleri, Arochukwu, Owerri and Umuleri.
By Femi Aribisala, Lagos.
Igbo Genius.
Even the bitterest adversaries of the Igbo cannot but admit that, as a people, they are very resourceful and ingenious. Indeed, this has often been the cause of their envy and dislike by others. However, more enlightened non-Igbo Nigerians see this as a cause for celebration. While today, the centre-point of Nigeria’s manufacturing is situated in the Lagos/Ogun axis, there is no doubt that the real locomotive ofNigeria’s indigenous industrialization lies farther afield in Aba and in the mushrooming cottage-industries of the Igbo heartland.
Igbo-menIn one of the paradoxes of Nigerian history, the terrible civil war provoked homespun industrialization in the South-East. Military blockade left the Igbo with little alternative than to be inventive in a hurry. While Nigeria as a nation failed woefully to harness this profitably after the war, it has nevertheless ensured that the Igbo are at the forefront of Nigeria’s economic development today.
Indeed, the way we disregard “made in Aba” today is the same way we disregarded “made inJapan” yesterday. For those of us who believe against the odds that Nigeria is the China of tomorrow, we equally recognize that the ingenuity of the Igbo is an indelible part of the actualization of that manifest destiny.
Hall of Fame.
The Igbo have been a great credit to Nigeria. They have given us a great number of our favourite sons, including international statesman Nnamdi Azikiwe; military leader Odumegwu Ojukwu; regional leader Michael Okpara; vice-president Alex Ekwueme; mathematical genius Chike Obi; literary icon Chinua Achebe; world-class economist Pius Okigbo; world boxing champion Dick Tiger; international statesman Emeka Anyaoku; and world-class artist Ben Enwonwu. Permit me to include in this illustrious list even some of my very good Igbo friends: Pat Utomi, Ojo Madueke, Olisa Agbakoba, Joy Ogwu, and Stanley Macebuh.
Let us get one thing straight: Nigeria would be a much poorer country without the Igbo.
Indeed, Nigeria would not be Nigeria without them. Can you imagine the Super Eagles without the Igbo? Not likely! Who can forget Nwankwo Kanu, Jay Kay Okocha and our very own Emmanuel Amuneke?
Can you imagine Nollywood without the Igbo? Impossible! Just think of Stella Damascus-Aboderin; Rita Dominic and Mike Ezuruonye.
And then there are the diaspora Igbo who many are unaware are of Igbo descent, including concert singer and actor Paul Robeson; Oscaraward-winner Forest Whitaker; mega-pastor T.D. Jakes; Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu; and BAFTA actor award-winner Chiwetel Ejiofor.
You may well wonder why I have found it necessary to present this small litany of Igbo who-is-who. I think it is important to emphasise how the Igbo have been very vital to the Nigerian project. They have more than representedNigeria creditably in virtually all walks of life. This makes it all the more absurd that this same people have been consistently denied the position of executive president of the country in all but six months of Nigeria’s 54 year history.
Civil-war legacy
Of course, a major reason for this was the 1967-1970 civil-war which had the Igbo on the losing side. But that was over 40 years ago. If there is really to be “no victor, no vanquished” in anything more than mere rhetoric, then the rehabilitation of the Igbo back into post civil-war Nigeria will not be complete until an Igbo man finally becomes president of the country.
That imperative should be of interest to every Nigerian nationalist, committed to the creation of one Nigeria where everyone has a deep sense of belonging. The problem, however, is that the Igbo themselves seem to be their own worst enemies in this regard. They appear to be doing their very best to ensure that this inevitable eventuality continues to be denied and delayed.
The Igbo need to forgive Nigerians. No one who lived through the horrors that precipitated the secession of Biafra and led to the civil-war cannot but admit that the Igbo were abused and maltreated in one of the worst pogroms ever. It was not just that they were senselessly massacred in their own country; it was that they were butchered.
I remember vividly gory pictures of scores and scores of the Igbo with hands chopped up and with legs amputated. And then there were the ravages of the three-year civil-war itself, resulting in the death of millions of Igbo; many through starvation and attrition.
The end of the war brought no respite, as the Igbo were pauperized by fiscal decrees that wiped out their savings and their properties were blatantly sequestered by opportunists. All this is more than enough to destroy the spirit of any group of people. But God has been on the side of the Igbo.
It is a testament to their resilience that, in spite of this terrible affliction, they have survived, bounced back and have even triumphed inNigeria. Forty years have now gone by. The Igbo may never forget what happened to them and, indeed, should never forget. But it is past time for them to forgive.
We Are Sorry.
This is one voice in the Nigerian wilderness saying to the Igbo from the depth of his heart: we are sorry. We are sorry for the way we mistreated you. We are sorry for the way we abused you. We are sorry for starving your children to death. We are sorry for killing your loved ones. We are sorry for stealing your properties.
We are sorry for making you feel unwanted in your own country. Please forgive us. It is time to forgive us. It is way past time for the Igbo to forgive Nigerians. We beg you in the name of God.
There was a civil war in the United States, but the defeated South rose from the ashes. Five of the last nine presidents of the United Stateshave been from the South, including Jimmy Carter from Georgia, George Bush from Texasand Bill Clinton from Arkansas. The time is overdue for an Igbo president of Nigeria, but it is not going to happen as long as the Igbo continue to hold a grudge against Nigeria and Nigerians.
There is no question about it: the Igbos cannot elect a president of Nigeria on their own. To do so, they have to join forces with others. They have to form alliances with people from other parts of Nigeria. That is not going to happen as long as the Igbo continue to bear a grudge against practically everybody else.
The Igbo have a gripe against virtually all the people they need. They have this tendency to antagonise their possible alliance partners. They keep dredging up the past, refusing to let sleeping dogs lie. Until they drop these gripes, they are not likely to realise their dreams.
Demonising Yorubas
For example, the Igbo have this tendency to demonise the Yorubas. It is alarming when reading the Vanguard blogs today to see the animosity often expressed between Igbo and Yoruba contributors. The hatred is most unhealthy. Insults are traded with abandon. What is the point of this? For how long will the Igbo demand emotional retribution from every Yoruba for the betrayal of Awolowo? Most of the contributors were not even born when the civil-war took place more than a generation ago.
There is now even transferred aggression against Babatunde Fashola, who made the blunder of repatriating some destitute Igbo from Lagos back to their home-states. The man has apologised for the infraction. He should be forgiven. Blunders are not the exclusive preserve of the non-Igbo. The Igbo have made more than a few themselves and will yet make others.
Paradoxically, the redemption of the Igbos to prominent national office moved apace under President Obasanjo; a Yoruba man. Recognising that Igbos are some of the most seasoned, competent and experienced public-servants, Obasanjo relied heavily on their expertise.
Thanks to him, we got Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala at Finance, Charles Soludo at Central Bank, Obiageli Ezekwesili at Education, Ndidi Okereke at the Stock Exchange, and Dora Akunyili at NAFDAC. Indeed, Igbo statesmen came into more prominence under Obasanjo than did Yoruba statesmen. But for some strange reason, this does not seem to have succeeded in assuaging the ill-feeling of the Igbos toward the Yorubas.
Bad Politicians
Within the framework of Nigerian politics, the Igbo also have a fundamental problem. Out of the three major ethnic groups in Nigeria, the Igbo have by far the worst politicians. They have no recognizable leaders, and have no discernible strategy as to how to negotiate power at the centre. As a result, the Igbo have tended to be short-changed at the federal level. Traditionally, the inconsequential ministries, such as the Ministry of Information, have been zoned to them.
The Igbo need to work out a plan that will take them to Aso Rock. First, they need to choose and groom a de-tribalised leader of the Azikiwe mould who can be sold to non-Igbos. Then, they need to give him undiluted support. At the moment the internal politics of the Igbo militates against this. The Igbo seem to hate themselves as much as they hate others. They seem to fight themselves with as much venom as they fight others. Every potential Igbo leader seems to have more enemies within than without. This must not be allowed to continue.
The Igbo need to help themselves in order that their friends can help them. In this centenary ofNigeria’s amalgamation, as we embark on the arduous process of crafting our future through a National Conference, we salute the Igbo for their fortitude and implore them to stake their claim inNigeria. Nigeria cannot survive without the Igbo.
AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED THIS IS THE NEXT LEADER OF ALL THE ODUDUWAS TO RIGHT THE WRONGS OF AWOLOWO AND OBASANJO
